Obama + Black = Success?

I'm just going to get right into it. I'm a big fan of Barack Obama but lately I've been wondering if much of his success has to do with the fact that he's Black. No doubt he's smart, charismatic, passionate and one of the best political writers and orators of our times, but he's young, relatively inexperienced and idealistic. Reminds us all of a modern day JFK, or so the mainstream opinion goes.

I'm torn on this one. Part of me thinks regardless of race he's a top tier candidate, and political celebrity. And another part of me thinks he's got a big advantaged gained from the fact that he's the best Black politician in recent memory and his message of change is directly tied to his race.

Right now, I'm leaning towards his race being the biggest factor in his success thus far, but I want to hear what you think.

Would Obama have the same success if he were White?

I think race plays a huge roll, but I think the biggest obama-factor is his confidence, and how he can speak to people on a level different from the rest of the candidates..

I don't mean that he can 'dumb it down', I mean he can relate to us on a level where we feel as though he actually knows what we mean. Not just acting as if health care is a big concern of them, because they're all so wealth. He seems to actually care, which is rare!

Well, let's take away his blackness and look at him again. Is there anything that stands out about him now? Or is he just like the rest of them?

He's younger than most politicians. Maybe that contributes to his ability to relate to others?

He does seem very confident, but aren't most politicians?

He doesn't have much experience. That's usually not a good thing.

White Obama seems sub-par to me.

I don't believe Obama's skin color has any influence on his success so far. His biggest assets are his public speaking and his ability to convey his honesty without sounding like a regular politician.

Obama does not easily set off the people's bullshit meter. Maybe that's because he isn't BSing like all the other politicians.

After years of Roveism and political games and lies, I think the American public is now well equipped to detect and dissect political speak. This is part of the reason for the cult following of Ron Paul and Barack Obama. Also, Dennis Kucinich to a lesser extent.

Freedom, can you please adjust your comment: "I don't believe Obama's skin color has%u200B any influence on his success so far"?

It makes you seem naive. Perhaps if you said it has little influence that would be better.

Clearly Obama's race has a big impact on his campaign, it's been the defining narrative of his entire run.

"His biggest assets are his public speaking and his ability to convey his honesty without sounding like a regular politician."

Haven't you ever thought that maybe it's his amazing public speaking skills that convinces the public that he's truly honest.

I think his "honesty" is more or less comparable to the rest of the canidates.

No, he's much more honest than the majority of the other candidates.
