Can someone here explain to me specifically what super delegates are? I haven't the faintest clue as this is a term that I've been introduced to only in the past 3 days or so, and am very curious about:

what they are
how they effect the election

Super Delegates are Democratic big whigs who throw their support behind a candidate--it's a peculiar Dem oddity that usually doesn't receive such public eyeballing as a frontrunner candidate usually merges from the pack. Elected officials, DNC makers or breakers are included in the bunch. Although many "say" they are committed, their support is fly by night--they can recommit to any candidate they choose....if the SD's were to throw support behind Clinton--should the Dem voters continue to show an obvious choice with Obama--that would be a very stupid decision, proving to the public and the world--that the nominating process is--shall we say--rigged?

Is it only related to the media attention they get? Or do they actually throw delegate numbers behind the candidate, and if so, how many, and how is that determined...

Super delegates is a rule started by Bob Beckel as way to get Mondale the nomination. He said he regrets it on H & C this last week. They hold power equal to about 13,000 votes. It is said that they are there as the "grown ups" in the party to keep the Dems. from going over the cliff. I find it interesting that they are being threatened to vote the way the crowd is going. And if they don't it will be 1968 all over. What happened to freedom to cast a vote your way? Democracy?
